Jane Birkin. ’70.

Jane B, again, in masculine-feminine melange. Her style, after all, described as a chaotic mix, a symphony of opposites, here subtly assembled.

This look evokes today’s boho beach, hippie luxe fashion: a white linen cut out, delicately accessorised.

But, pictured, Jane drums up masculinity in a boxy, DIY T-shirt, knotting it against the rib cage, cutting up the midriff.

To this end, she presents adaptability, careless elegance; summarily, the height of casual. Birkin also suggests sex by exposing habitually hidden navel and through dressing a man’s shirt, which by implication, lies in wait in her boudoir.

Jane, playing on the dichotomy of male and female, therefore gives straight-up sexy but with bonus insouciance and freedom of expression.

Kate Moss in Marc Jacobs. ’12.

Kate Moss draws inspo from the archives: pictured, a Birkin reference.

Recall an earlier post on Birkin’s scandaleux, flipped and brooched crotchet maxi.

Similarly, Kate, pictured, also wears her get-up back-to-front, adding interest, movement, to otherwise stock standard vintage.

Her hair and makeup play into flapper style robe, bouncing against rippling gold panels, for ultime party dressing.

And that gold, almost transcendent, gathered, panelled and groovy, celebrates something bigger than herself: here, the creative, pooled vision of Kate.

Lenny Kravitz in YSL. ’24.

The pussybow blouse, in brand-savvy circles, marks the YSL Rive Gauche collection. By the frenetic genius no less.

Its arty flair mimics the possibilities of a life lived on the edge. The perfect complement to a rockstar seeking creative expression.

This midnight suit, all nipped-in waist, hits with waspishness- what you’d expect in a competitive field. The effect – a music industry darling.
